Austen was born in Turtle Lake, ND but spent his K-12 years in Portland, OR and Sacramento, CA.

After graduating from high school, Austen came back to North Dakota where his father took a position as Pastor at Hebron Baptist Church.

Austen received his Associate Arts degree in Broadcasting at Dickinson State College, later transferring to UND where he received his BS degree in Speech.

Austen began his News broadcasting career in 1977 and retired 36 years later in 2013. He enjoyed every aspect of news reporting, producing and anchoring.

After leaving broadcasting, Austen worked in the fundraising/development field before taking a position in Business Development with ProSource, a professional recruiting team in Fargo.

Austen believes in limited but effective government, low taxes, strong business climate, accountability in all areas and traditional, time-honored principles and values.

He has been married for 40 years to Angela Tracy of Gackle, ND who recently retired from the West Fargo school district as a 6th grade teacher. The Schauer’s have three adult children and 9 grandchildren. They have lived in West Fargo for 15 years.

His reason for running for ND District 13 House is simple: It is time to give back.
